Caleb loves Cookie Monster, so his mama planned a cookie-themed first birthday party for him. She sent me a really cute inspirational photo, but I made one major design change. Real chocolate chip cookies! Who wants to bite into a fondant cookie? Not me!
Cake flavor:
vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream
To begin, I iced the top and bottom tiers in light blue buttercream. Recently, I’ve found that adding a small amount of royal blue gel color results in a better light blue color than sky blue does. I think the sky blue is too light and when it meets the butter in the buttercream, the color is more on the green side of things. The middle tier was iced in ivory buttercream.
Then, I added fondant accents to all three tiers. For Cookie Monster, I used a milkshake straw as my central support for his body/head and then molded his arms and legs. I used my clay extruder to make his fuzzy hair, and attached that using a small amount of water. Tip: knead a bit of shortening into your fondant before running it through the clay extruder. It will come out much easier and your hands will thank you!
After I stacked the cake, I added the cookies and they totally brought the design to the next level. I used the most perfect looking cookies on the cake and sent the extras home with my client, so they could have a little treat on the way home.
